Short tips on how you can help yourself

Regular foot examination
Check your feet yourself. If you have nerve or vascular damage, you should do this every day. The easiest way to examine your feet is after washing or showering, when you wipe them with a towel or before putting on socks. Don't ignore the areas between your toes. For an easier inspection of the sole, you can use a mirror.
Foot care 
Wash your feet with running lukewarm water and mild soap. If you have sensitive feet, you should measure the temperature of the water or at least check the temperature with your hand. Wash them completely, but individually. If you have a wound, make sure that running water drains away from it. After washing, wipe them with a soft towel, also between the fingers. After washing, apply a neutral moisturizing cream or other ointment to dry your feet, but do not apply it between your toes.
Warming the legs
If your feet are constantly cold, wear warm socks, even at night if necessary. Do not heat your feet with an electric pad or other hot objects, since you may burn yourself without feeling the burning pain.

Comfortable and suitable footwear
Wear comfortable shoes and clean socks. Buy shoes in the afternoon, when the foot is already swollen. The inside of the shoe should be smooth and the leather should be soft. The sock must not have pronounced seams, nor must it be patched. If you have swollen feet, wear shoes that have laces or shoes that close with Velcro straps. Loosen the laces or toggle sufficiently. Even if you don't have problems with your feet, the footwear should be comfortable. Running shoes are very suitable for longer walks. If you have signs of nerve damage or poor blood circulation, protective footwear is essential and should be worn outside and at home. A walking shoe should have enough room for the toes, a soft upper part, a removable insole and a thick rubber sole.
Nail care
Cut the nails so that they extend beyond the edge. Especially if you have an impairment of touch and pain perception, keep the following in mind: Wear footwear to avoid injury. Do not walk barefoot if your feet do not feel well. Before putting on the shoe, examine the inside of the shoe with your hand to make sure there is no small object inside. Also check that the sock fits the foot without wrinkling.
