Fungal nail infections are most often caused by dermatophytes, yeasts and moulds.

Nail fungus

Fungal infection of the nails, professionally called onychomycosis, is more common on the feet than on the hands. There are several types of fungi that can attack the nails. The most common are dermatophytes, but also yeasts and moulds.

We can get infected in places where people walk barefoot and where there is a lot of moisture (e.g. swimming pools, saunas, group bathrooms,…). Men and people who are intensively involved in sports are more often infected. There is also a greater chance of fungal infection in people who already have fungal skin infections, nail damage, peripheral vascular disease (diabetes) or a weakened immune system. The number of infected people increases with age. Only one nail can be affected, most often on the big toe, but eventually several nails become infected.

Make sure to watch the video with Pedimed on how to deal with fungal nail problems, which was aired on RTV SLO.

Nail fungus destroys the toenails of both the elderly and the younger population. In the case of faster infection, the individual sensitivity or susceptibility of an individual to infection is also decisive. The success and speed of treatment depends on the extent of damage to the nail. Persistence and regular visits to the pedicurist/podiatrist are essential.

How do we treat nail fungus?

Methods of nail fungus rehabilitation

We recommend testing for fungal infection before the treatment at the Pedimed Center.

In the case of a positive result, we use the listed methods of nail fungus remediation

  • cleaning the nail and the nail canal,
  • sanding and removal of the fungal part and local sanitization with antifungal agents,
  • photodynamic therapy Pact Med.
Photodynamic antimycotic therapy treats nail fungus and ingrown toenails

PACT MED – Photodynamic therapy

It offers an alternative to the systemic treatment of nail fungus – without side effects. The nail fungus remediation method has proven to be a very successful remediation method. We remove the damaged/infected part of the nail, apply the PACT MED gel, wait a few minutes and irradiate the nail with an LED light.

From our practice

What is PACT MED photodynamic therapy and why is it special?

Why is this method special?
This antimycotic method destroys toenail fungus more effectively than other methods.

How does the rehabilitation work?
We use photodynamic therapy (LED light and PACT MED gel). This targets and destroys the fungal cells, so the fungus can no longer reproduce.

How often is the therapy performed?
The therapy can be repeated several times. This allows us to destroy the fungus, even if the fungus has strongly and deeply damaged the nail, nail tissue or cuticle.

The images show the condition before the start of therapy, 5 weeks after the implementation of the Pact Med method and 11 weeks after the implementation of the photodynamic method. The results are visible and the rehabilitation was successful.
